Pokrovsky began flying I-16s in the 72nd Mixed Air Squadron of the Northern Fleet and flew over the Murmansk Front in the early stages of the war. Like many pilots, he changed aircraft many times, from Hurricanes to Kittyhawks, Airacobras, and Yak-1bs.

Pokrovski was named a Hero of the Soviet Union in July 1943 and survived the war, which was rewarded with twelve personal victories and six joint operations in over 350 combat missions.
