When Hitler's military machine launched its devastating attack on Poland in 1939, the SS was still in the process of transitioning from a political to a military organization and became the Waffen-SS (armed SS) and the military wing of the Nazi party.

Well-supplied and well-led, the fanatical Waffen-SS was an increasingly feared fighting force. This controversial elite unit was accused of atrocities, particularly in Poland and on the Eastern Front during Operation Barbarossa.
