Battalion commander François Léon de Rochebaron and his loyal followers embarked on a path to doom after escaping from a Spanish prison. Following his brutal experience with his Spanish captors, the once honorable de Rochebaron swore relentless revenge on France's enemies. Thus began the legend of the "Butchers" of the 73rd Line Regiment.

No mercy was shown in the battle, and they became the scourge of the Iberian Peninsula. Only when the Bouchers encountered an English battalion at Grijo in 1809 did they finally meet men equal to their shameful style of warfare. During the battle, De Rochebaron engaged in a bloody and protracted duel with an English captain, a brutality surpassed only by the altercation between his beloved poodle, Fifi, and the British mixed-breed dog, Duchess, at their feet. Although all the combatants survived this encounter, they vowed to meet again and settle the matter.
