Victory at Sea: Tirpitz

The Bismarck's sister ship, the Tirpitz, was 2,000 tons heavier, making it the heaviest warship ever built by a European navy. She served in Norway and the Baltic Fleet, acting as an effective deterrent. The Tirpitz became an obsession for the British. After the sinking of the Bismarck, the Tirpitz, as Germany's most powerful warship, was destined to spend much of the war in port.

After the daring British raid on St. Nazaire, it was deemed impractical to use the Tirpitz against Allied Atlantic convoys. Instead, she was deployed sparingly as a deterrent against the Allied invasion of Norway and to intercept Allied convoys heading to the Soviet Union. In September 1943, she bombarded Allied positions on Spitsbergen together with the battleship Scharnhorst. This was the only time the powerful battleship fired its main battery in anger.

The relentless British attacks would prove to be the end of the mighty ship. They launched numerous attacks on the vessel, from midget submarines and two large-scale air raids. She was finally sunk in 1944 by Lancaster bombers armed with 12,000-pound Tallboy bombs.
