Victory at Sea: Royal Navy fleet

At the outbreak of World War II, the Royal Navy of Great Britain was the largest navy in the world. However, Britain entered the war primarily with ships dating from the First World War. Because the Royal Navy already possessed many powerful vessels, the construction of state-of-the-art designs was limited. This meant that at the outbreak of World War II, Britain had far more battleships than most other nations, but they were armed with smaller guns than those built for the most modern ships.

Although the main fighting force remained concentrated in home waters, task forces were deployed to many far-flung areas, but the Royal Navy could not be strong everywhere. Despite being heavily strained, the Royal Navy lived up to its traditional "can!" ethos and fought hard in all theaters.

In addition to its battleship forces, the Royal Navy maintained a handful of fast battlecruisers—some of them quite old—and aircraft carriers. These were supported by a strong cruiser force and light forces, including destroyers, motor torpedo boats (MTBs), and motor gunboats (MGBs).

As the war progressed, aircraft carriers became increasingly important, and anti-aircraft defenses were constantly improved on all ships. However, the heavy guns of battleships and cruisers played a vital role in many theaters of war. British capital ships saw action in the Arctic and the Atlantic against German commerce raiders, in the Mediterranean against Italian forces, and ventured into the Pacific in an ill-fated attempt to halt the Japanese advance. Although the large-scale fleet operations planned and desired by the Royal Navy's designers did not materialize during the Second World War, the Royal Navy adapted well to the war for which it was designed and distinguished itself with great honor.
