Submarines: The Gato-class submarines were the first mass-produced US submarine class of World War II and formed the majority of the US Navy's submarine fleet in that war. It was the Gato class and its successors that were largely responsible for the destruction of the Japanese merchant fleet. Individual Gato-class vessels were named after marine animals, with the lead submarine of the class being named after a type of small catshark.

MTBs: The Elco was equipped with four torpedo tubes, which, combined with its speed, made it a serious threat to larger ships. As the largest PT boat used by the US Navy, the Elco is also known for being commanded by future President Kennedy. The crews of these boats relied on their smaller size, speed, and maneuverability—and on darkness—for survival.
