Victory at Sea: US Navy fleet

Although the United States of America has a vast land area, almost all of its allies and trading partners are overseas, and these interests require a powerful navy to support them.

At the outbreak of World War II, the US Navy possessed some of the largest and most modern battleships in the world and, despite the losses suffered in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, was able to maintain a strong presence in the Pacific. However, in the vastness of that ocean, the battleship was no longer king of battle. It was fortunate for the Americans that the handful of aircraft carriers then in service with the US Navy escaped destruction; given subsequent events, it is doubtful that a battleship-only force could have defeated the Imperial Japanese Navy.

During the Pacific War, a conflict between the air power of opposing fleets, the aircraft carrier became the most important asset of the US Navy. The US carrier forces were under pressure early on, but as US industrial power came to the fore, new aircraft carriers and air groups were built for them in such numbers that the enemy simply could not match their strength.

The US naval forces were mainly deployed in the Pacific, but some battleships and a larger number of destroyers were deployed in the Atlantic, where their main adversaries were German submarines.
