US Navy Aircraft by Warlord Games
Victory at Sea - US Navy Aircraft
After the destruction of Pearl Harbor, the Americans relied heavily on the aircraft of their carrier fleets. Until the Battle of Midway, the US Navy had a considerable number of aircraft in service. The age of battleships was over; air power now dominated.
Grumman TBF/TBM Avenger: The Avenger was a welcome relief for Devastator pilots when it finally rolled off the production line, as it was a good torpedo bomber, even though this task took its toll on aircraft specifically designed for it. With a crew of three, it at least had a chance of defending itself, and a well-placed torpedo often meant that losing several aircraft was a worthwhile trade for a sinking enemy warship.
Grumman F4F Wildcat: The Wildcat, which earned Grumman a reputation for building robust aircraft, was never given a speed limit. With its drum shape and blunt wings, it was the ideal aircraft for carrier operations. It was not only popular with the US Navy but also saw service with the Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm, where it was initially known as the Martlet.
PBY 5 Catalina: The Catalina was used for anti-submarine warfare (ASW), as a convoy escort, patrol bomber, and transport aircraft. It was armed with five machine guns for defense, could carry either a bomb or a torpedo load, and was responsible for sinking numerous submarines in both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
