The officers of the US airborne troops underwent the same rigorous training program as their men, producing leaders as tough as the troops they commanded. Great emphasis was placed on aggression and initiative, as platoon leaders were often expected to operate separately from the command staff for extended periods—a requirement that would prove essential during the intense, but often localized, fighting of the Battle of the Bulge. Even the headquarters specialists, such as radio operators and medics, received the same training—they were, first and foremost, paratroopers.
