Type 91 So-Mo Armoured Car

The So-Mo, also known as the Type 91 Broad Gauge Railway Tractor, is notable for its unusual ability to quickly switch between road and rail. The So-Mo could reach speeds of around 25 mph on roads and nearly twice that on railway tracks. The six-wheeled So-Mo saw service with both the Imperial Japanese Army and the SNLF during World War II, and also participated in the Japanese invasion of China in 1937. The vehicle had no integrated armament, but the crew often carried a 7.7 mm machine gun, which was fired through the observation ports in the turret.

Despite its light LMG armament, the So-Mo is a relatively inexpensive armored vehicle for the Japanese army, offering the dual advantage of being able to transport six infantrymen across the battlefield. It is especially useful when there are railway tracks on the battlefield!
