The T-34 series, with its enormous armor, revolutionized tank design principles during the war. The T-34's angled, angular armor increased its effective thickness and resulted in a greater deflection of shells. With the introduction of the T-34 into service, German tank designs adopted similarly angled armor, as seen on the Panther and King Tiger. As German tank design gained prominence, the Soviet T-34/85 raised the bar even higher.

The T-34/85, the true symbol of Soviet military might in World War II, had a new turret that housed the more powerful 85 mm ZiS gun. An extremely robust and reliable tank, the T-34/85 possessed excellent off-road mobility, particularly in the marshland or snow of the Eastern Front, and was easy for the crew to operate and maintain.
