Black Seas: Spanish Navy 3rd Rates of Renown

This box contains three ships of the Spanish Third Class. Building upon the excellent plastic parts, the box includes additional metal components to assemble the following famous ships, all of which participated in the Battle of Trafalgar!

Monarca – a third-rate, 74-gun ship of the Montañés line, belonging to the Montañés class. Her main guns were arranged on two complete decks, with 28 24-pounder guns on the lower deck and 30 18-pounder guns on the upper deck, in addition to 12 8-pounder guns and 4 8-pounder guns on the quarterdeck and forecastle, respectively.

Under the command of Captain Teodoro Argumosa, she participated in the Battle of Trafalgar, where she was badly damaged by HMS Bellerophon. Fifty-five Royal Marines boarded her and took her prisoner, but a night later the survivors overpowered their captors and left her adrift in a storm. Three days after the battle, the survivors decided to attempt repairs in order to return to Cádiz, but were pursued by HMS Leviathan (which had picked up the adrift Marines). She ran aground near Huelva on October 28 and was destroyed by HMS Naiad to prevent her recovery.

The Argonauta – a third-rate 80-gun ship of the line – was the last ship of the Montañés class (of which there were four). On August 25, 1800, as part of Joaquín Moreno's squadron, she repelled the British Ferrol Expedition.

She subsequently fought at the Battle of Cape Finisterre and as part of Federico Gravina's second squadron at Trafalgar. At the latter battle, she was taken in tow by HMS Poyphemus, but was abandoned on October 24th due to the storm following the battle, when HMS Defiance rescued survivors and attempted to re-establish a tow, without success. The Argonauta sank six days later, and her survivors landed in Algeciras the following day.

San Justo, a 74-gun ship of the line, was launched on November 11, 1779. She participated in actions such as the Battle of Cape St. Vincent and the Siege of Gibraltar. Later, she took part in the Battle of Trafalgar and escaped destruction. She was finally broken up at Cartagena in 1828.
