The Spanish 1st Rates are particularly characterful when the national special rules are used in the game. Many Spanish ships were extremely heavily armed and can therefore take the 'Over Gunned' upgrade at no additional cost. However, this bonus is not without its drawbacks, as such bulky ships were difficult to handle. They must therefore pass a skill test if they attempt to sail at a faster knot speed.
