Soviet Naval Brigade Medium Machine Gun Team

With the Soviet Navy largely bottled up in port, many sailors found themselves deployed as infantry at the front, often still clad in their black naval uniforms, complete with the distinctive cap and striped ‘telnyashka’ undershirt.

Numerous specialist naval infantry units were formed: forty brigades and five regiments. They earned a reputation for tenacity and daring in both defensive battles and amphibious operations along the Baltic and Black Sea coasts. Due to their prior military experience and strong esprit de corps, they were amongst the finest troops available to the Soviet commanders. This is also true in the Bolt Action tabletop game, where Naval Brigade units are part of the Hammer & Sickle army’s special rules, bringing the ever-useful ‘Tough Fighters’ rule. This MMG team is perfect for laying down suppressive fire whilst their comrades press the attack!

German troops referred to the Naval Infantry as 'The Black Death' due to their black or dark blue uniforms and fearsome reputation – a well-deserved nickname!
