The shortage meant that Soviet formations received only sparse transport and rearguard support. A notable exception were the engineer detachments. Their expertise was too valuable to be ignored: bridge building, demolition, fortification construction, and the laying and clearing of minefields. All of this required skills that the conscripted masses lacked. Assault engineers were specialists tasked with dismantling enemy positions and clearing obstacles during an advance to allow armored units to break through. This was extremely dangerous work with a high casualty rate (even by Red Army standards), and the engineer units were sometimes equipped with SN-42 tanks to give them a fighting chance.
