Soviet Anti-tank Teams

The Soviet Union's armies had many weapons available to counter the threat posed by German armored units - from orthodox anti-tank rifles to strange "Molotov cocktail" launchers and the unconventional use of dogs as living anti-tank mines.

While most nations found the anti-tank rifle to be inferior against the latest armored vehicles, the Soviets continued to use them in large numbers, even though they had to be fired at dangerously short ranges to be truly effective. The Ampulomet was a strange, mortar-like device that launched a glass ball containing a mixture of phosphorus and sulfur up to 400 meters, albeit inaccurately.

Perhaps the most unusual and controversial anti-tank weapon was the "dog mine." Equipped with a simple lever, it triggered its charge when the dog sought shelter under enemy tanks or vehicles. Many animals simply ran from the noise and smells of battle, while others fled to the safety of Soviet machinery or trenches. The Germans were sufficiently frightened to shoot any dogs they saw—the dog mine teams are credited with destroying several German tanks at the Battle of Kursk.
