Sir William Waller from Warlord Games

As a supporter of the Parliamentarian cause, Waller raised his own cavalry regiment and captured Portsmouth in September 1642. He then fought at Edgehill, learning from the defeat of the Roundhead cavalry. He spent the rest of the year securing the approaches to London and several strategically important locations, including Farnham, Winchester, and Arundel.

In early 1643, Waller was appointed Major-General of the West and fought along the Welsh marshlands. He secured Bristol and won an important battle at Hingham House, outside Gloucester. His series of victories was finally halted by Prince Maurice at Ripple Field in April 1643. He then led a campaign against his old friend Lord Ralph Hopton, who had been appointed commander of the Royalist armies in the West. In July 1643, he narrowly avoided defeat against a larger force at Lansdown Hill, but was decisively beaten a week later at Roundway Down.

In November 1643, Waller was appointed commander of the forces of the newly formed Southern Association. After a series of skirmishes and maneuvers, Waller avenged his defeat at Roundway with his victory at Cheriton in March 1649. The battle was considered the greatest Parliamentarian victory to date and demonstrated the improved quality of the Roundhead cavalry. Waller's troops, working in conjunction with the army of the Earl of Essex, were intended to mark the King's army as Essex marched to disaster in the southwest. In an attack on Cropredy Bridge in June 1644, Waller's army was repulsed and promptly disintegrated. He fought at the Second Battle of Newbury and was the last of the old Parliamentarian generals to resign after the formation of the New Model Army.
