Bolt Action: Sd.Kfz 251/9 Ausf D (Stummel) half-track

The standard version of the Sd.Kfz 251 half-track series was equipped with a 7.92 mm MG 34 or MG 42 machine gun, mounted at the front in the open space above and behind the driver. A second machine gun could be mounted at the rear on an anti-aircraft mount. The stub mount replaced the front machine gun mount with a 75 mm L/24 gun, which was also used on the early StuG III and Panzer IV.
With its characteristic "slack track" design without idler pulleys and the clearly recognizable nested running gear system of overlapping and nested road wheels, which was common to almost all German half-tracks of this period, the 251 series had low ground pressure and better traction than most half-track vehicles of other nations.

Unlike the Allied half-track armor, the armor plates of the 251 series were designed to prevent the penetration of standard rifle bullets (such as the Mauser 7.9x57mm round). They achieved this through a combination of metal thickness (front plates were 14.5 mm thick) and sloped armor (V-shaped, 8 mm thick).

From 1942 onwards, each Panzergrenadier battalion was supported by a stub platoon, which was used to provide direct support to other half-tracks when needed.
