Even in the early stages of World War II, the German army began equipping and supporting its Panzergrenadiers with armored half-track vehicles. They developed the Sd.Kfz. 251 series, which Hanomag produced continuously in the thousands each year and which, with more than twenty variants, could be found on almost every battlefield. One of these variants was the 251/2 8cm Granatwerfer (8cm Grenade Launcher). This variant of the Hanomag was equipped with the standard infantry mortar. This offered several operational possibilities, allowing the grenade launcher to support the infantry while remaining well-protected. Often, however, it was also removed from the half-track and assigned to the infantry. With a loading capacity of over 60 rounds for the 81mm mortar, the 251/2 8cm Granatwerfer was a reliable support vehicle.
