Royal Navy Submarines & MTB sections

Submarines: Designed for use in northern European waters and the Mediterranean, the S-class was maneuverable and possessed a remarkable ability for extremely fast dives. Combined with a large torpedo salvo, this was a successful pre-war design that was soon updated and put back into production.

MTBs: The Fairmile A was designed from the outset to use prefabricated components produced by small companies such as furniture manufacturers, which could then be assembled in shipyards. She has a top speed of 25 knots and is armed with a 3-pounder gun, a pair of .303 machine guns, and a depth charge.

The Fairmile B (like its predecessor, the Fairmile A) was primarily intended as a submarine hunter and was therefore equipped with a depth charge. The Fairmile B, produced in large numbers, was also used in the attack on St. Nazaire.

With a speed of 26 knots, the Fairmile C was a motor gunboat equipped with two 2-pounder cannons and eight machine guns of various calibers. It was primarily used for close escort duties and some covert missions.

The Fairmile D, nicknamed the "Dog Boat," was highly adaptable and could be equipped with a range of weapons, allowing it to serve as both a motorboat and a torpedo boat. Some were used by the Royal Air Force to rescue downed aircraft over long distances.
