Roman politics in the 1st century BC was a tense and often violent affair, with the Republic thrown into crisis by the Social War against its Italian allies and numerous smaller civil conflicts fought between powerful magnates – and this doesn't even take into account the battles against foreign enemies!

Gaius Marius and Lucius Cornelius Sulla were both men who embodied their era—powerful and astute politicians, diplomats, and generals who did not shy away from ruthless conquest to achieve their own and Rome's goals. Both held high political office and fought both overseas against Rome's enemies and against each other on Italian soil. The elder Marius served no fewer than seven terms as consul, while Sulla won the First Mithridatic War and became the first man to seize dictatorial power in Rome by force, setting a precedent that would lead to centuries of violence.
