The P-47 Thunderbolt was a versatile US fighter aircraft produced between 1941 and 1945 and used in both the Mediterranean and the Pacific. In addition to eight wing-mounted .50 caliber machine guns, it could carry five-inch rockets or a bomb load of up to 2,500 pounds. When fully loaded in this way, the fighter was among the heaviest of the entire war. However, this also meant it could perform a wide range of roles—it could be used as an escort fighter at short to medium ranges or as a ground attack fighter.
