Submarines: Compared to a German Type VII C submarine, the Marcello-class submarines were much larger, displacing 1,060 tons versus 769 tons. Speed ​​and range were nearly identical between the two classes, but the Marcello class had more torpedo tubes than the famous Type VII C. The Marcello class should be considered one of the most successful submarines built by Italian shipyards, exhibiting excellent qualities—they were fast, structurally robust, and relatively maneuverable.

MTBs: Reaching speeds of 45 knots, the Italian Motoscafo Armato Silurante (Armed Torpedo Boat), or MAS boats, were extremely active in the Mediterranean. Although not well-suited to rougher seas, they nevertheless caused quite a stir, including the torpedoing of HMS Cape Town and an attack on the port of Malta, the latter being a failure that cost two MAS boats.

Based on German S1-class S-boats, which the Italians encountered in the port of Cattaro in Yugoslavia, the MS-boat was larger and far more seaworthy than the MAS-class boats. Although not as fast, it was far better suited for long-range patrols in the Mediterranean, being more stable and comfortable. It was an MS-class boat that sank HMS Manchester, the largest ship of all MTBs in the war, in 1942.
