Prussian Uhlans from Warlord Games
Black Powder: Prussian Uhlans
Prussia was known under Frederick the Great for its outstanding infantry. Less well known is the effectiveness of the Prussian cavalry on the European battlefield in the 19th century. At the beginning of the Napoleonic Wars, Bonaparte himself warned his generals about the excellent Prussian cavalry.
The well-trained and disciplined Prussian horse formed regiments of cuirassiers, dragoons, hussars and lancers during the Hundred Days campaign, with the lighter cavalry intended for raids and skirmishes, but in reality taking its place in the main battle lines during the trench warfare.
The Uhlans, or lancers, of the Prussian army, alongside the dragoons and cuirassiers, fulfilled the roles of both light cavalry and line shock troops. Equipped with a deadly 9-foot lance, they were an imposing sight. It was the Uhlans who saved Marshal Blücher when he was without horses at Ligny.
In the later stages of the war, the Uhlans primarily wore simple dark blue uniforms and practical equipment. At the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, all units had lance pennants with a black and white swallowtail pattern.
