Black Powder: Prussian Landwehr cavalry

Known for its outstanding infantry under Frederick the Great, Prussia also deployed highly effective Prussian cavalry on the European battlefields of the 19th century.

The Landwehr cavalry, founded in 1813, was a huge force of mounted, well-trained militia, similar in form to their infantry counterparts. The force was an enormous asset to the Prussian war machine, as it comprised over thirty regiments by the time of the Hundred Days Campaign.

The Landwehr cavalry wore a dark blue Litewka long coat with a collar and cuffs in provincial colors. Headgear consisted of a combination of a traditional field cap and a shako—often made of oilskin and bearing a painted white cross. Lance pennants could vary and often reflected the uniform trim halved with white, but by the time of Waterloo, the entire Landwehr cavalry had switched to the standard black and white pennants.

The Landwehr's lance-armed cavalry fought well in the field and comprised about 40% of Blücher's cavalry at Waterloo - a good opportunity to put many of these brave sons of Prussia on the tabletop!
