Prussia was known under Frederick the Great for its outstanding infantry. Less well known is the ecstasy of the Prussian cavalry on the European battlefield in the 19th century. Early in the Napoleonic Wars, Bonaparte himself warned his generals about the excellent Prussian cavalry.

The well-trained and disciplined Prussian horse formed regiments of cuirassiers, dragoons, hussars, and lancers during the Hundred Days' Campaign, alongside the lighter cavalry intended for raids and skirmishes, but in reality, it took its place in the main battle lines during trench warfare. Hussars were ever-present in the Napoleonic Wars, with twelve splendidly dressed regiments comprising 38% of the total Prussian cavalry at Waterloo. Under the command of the venerable 'Marshal Forward' – Field Marshal Blücher – they were a formidable opponent...
