Large numbers of cavalry units were deployed in the wars of the 17th century. Equipped with helmets and breastplates, they were meant to approach the enemy and quickly overwhelm them. The heavy cavalry of the cuirassiers wore blackened steel armor, resistant to most blades and projectiles. Used en masse as assault troops in the Thirty Years' War, cuirassiers were a formidable opponent. Dragoons were found on all sides and could dismount to hold tactical positions such as bridges, but also fire from the saddle.

All armies of this era used as many guns as they could afford, from fearsome large sakers to small field guns like the falconet, which unleashed a deadly hail of bullets at close range.
