In the 17th century, few weapons were more terrifying than the dreadful explosion of the mortar bomb. Primarily used in sieges, mortars hurled their hissing, roaring projectiles high into the air, surging over the highest walls or towers and crashing down onto the streets or houses below before exploding with a tremendous bang.

They terrified garrisons and civilians alike, sometimes leading civilians to beg the city's governor to surrender to prevent further damage. The mortars were rarely used in the field and required a skilled crew to set the fuses and fire the shells accurately without blowing themselves up!
