Blood Red Skies: P-39 Airacobra Squadron

The Bell P-39 Airacobra was one of the most important combat aircraft of the US Army Air Forces when the United States entered World War II. It was also used throughout the war by the Soviet Air Force, the French, the RAF, and the Italian Air Force, and thus saw action in most theaters of war, but especially in the Southwest Pacific, the Mediterranean, and the USSR.

The RAF rejected its use in Western Europe due to its relative unsuitability at high altitudes, while the Soviets made good use of it on the Eastern Front, where most dogfights took place at lower altitudes. Under Soviet pilots, the P-39 achieved the highest number of aerial victories attributed to any US fighter aircraft in a single conflict.
