Blood Red Skies: P-38 Lightning Squadron

The P-38 Lightning's comparatively long range proved invaluable in the Pacific Theater and as an escort aircraft in low-level attacks over occupied Europe, and it was also very successful as a ground-attack fighter aircraft.

The twin-engine fighter saw its greatest use and successes in the Pacific Theater. Although it could not outperform the A6M Zero at speeds below 200 mph, its speed and rate of climb allowed it to perform multiple high-speed flybys in combat, and the armor of Japanese aircraft was more vulnerable than that of German aircraft to the close-quarters gun groups of the P-38.

It was P-38s that participated in the interceptor mission that cost Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, the architect of the attack on Pearl Harbor, his life. In this mission, 16 P-38G Lightnings encountered two G4M "Betty" transports and six escorting Zeros. Both transports were lost, as were two Zeros that lost a P-38.
