The 3rd Battalion, which was struck from all official records, exemplified Brigadier General Alan Campbell's view: "I have gathered several detachments of salvaged men from Sir J. Moore's army, which I found scattered in all directions, without the necessities, and some of them were committing all manner of excesses that could make the name of a British soldier hateful in the nation." During the Douro Campaign and the capture of Porto in 1809, the 3rd Battalion crossed bayonets with the infamous French regiment Les Bouchers (The Butchers). The bloody encounter was also notable for the fierce dogfight between Duchess, the 3rd Battalion's bull terrier mascot, and the French poodle Fifi, both animals leaving their mark.
