Napoleon Bonaparte's seemingly invincible French army suffered its first defeat in the Napoleonic Wars against the Spanish army at Baylen in 1808. This was arguably the high point of the Spanish army's performance during the wars.

History has not looked favorably upon the armies of Spain during the Napoleonic Wars. They suffered many defeats, but also pinned down a large number of French troops in a brutal war that undermined the strength of countless French units, who were only too happy to leave a country where they were so hated. Although the vicious Spanish guerrillas wreaked havoc on their French enemies, the Spanish infantry also caused thousands of casualties on their own soil.

Most regiments had two battalions – the second and third battalions consisted entirely of fusiliers, carrying the distinctive white Sencilla (or Ordenanza) flag with a red Bourbon saltire. We know many players like to field two flags in a battalion, regardless of history, so we've included two ensign figures. If you're more interested in historical accuracy, Warlorg Games has added an extra fusilier for free!

A Spanish army looks magnificent on the tabletop, and although it's generally of poor quality, quantity has its own value, and Spanish troops have improved throughout the war. So make sure your units have been blessed by the priest before you send them out to drive Boney's hated invaders out of Mother Spain!
