With the development of line tactics, light troops were needed for reconnaissance, security, or outpost duties. They could operate independently of the rigid line tactics and received tactical instructions to support them.

Light infantry also gained great importance in Napoleon's troops and their column tactics. Initially organized only in separate regiments or battalions, such riflemen were soon assigned to all battalions.
