The newest units of Napoleon's legendary Imperial Guard to be raised were known as the "Young Guard" and grew to well over a dozen regiments, with the light infantry of the tirailleurs and voltigeurs being particularly numerous. They received higher pay than the "line troops" and were generally given preferential treatment. In return, they were expected to display utmost bravery in battle and unwavering loyalty to Napoleon by fighting where the fighting was fiercest and often refusing to surrender.
