The most recently formed units of Napoleon's legendary Imperial Guard were known as the "Young Guard" and grew to well over a dozen regiments, with the light infantry of the tirailleurs and voltigeurs being particularly numerous. They received higher pay than the line troops and were generally given preferential treatment. In return, they were expected to demonstrate utmost bravery and unwavering loyalty to Napoleon in battle—and this was doubly true for their officers, who had to lead and motivate their men amidst the fiercest fighting!
