Designed by Sir William Congreve in 1808 based on rockets captured in the Indian state of Mysore, the eponymous Congreve rocket consisted of an iron sheet tube filled with gunpowder, fitted with an explosive shell and attached to a long wooden stick. Fired from frames or troughs, whilst somewhat unreliable and at times terrifyingly inaccurate, they had the great advantage of being both potent and terrifying, as well as being far easier to transport and supply than an equivalent battery of cannon. Throughout the Napoleonic Wars they would be used in increasing numbers, growing in size and capability to become a truly deadly weapon.
