Mitsubishi A6M2 Zero Squadron by Warlord Games

Blood Red Skies: Mitsubishi A6M2 Zero Squadron

The Mitsubishi A6M Zero was a fast, modern fighter aircraft, but it lacked pilot armor. This weakness was hardly noticeable when the Zero was in the hands of aggressive and well-trained pilots. Fast, agile, and with an extremely long range, it proved to be a threat to the Allies in the early stages of the Pacific War.

The pilots called it "Reisen" (Zero-Fighter; the "0" comes from the last digit of the imperial year 2600, in which the aircraft entered service), the official designation of the Allies was "Zeke", although colloquially "Zero" also entered general Allied usage.

The A6M remains the most famous Japanese fighter aircraft of World War II. It was the world's first carrier-based fighter considered the equal of its land-based counterpart. The lack of an adequate successor in the face of technological advancements meant that the aircraft was developed and produced in large numbers long after its effective limits had been reached and it had been surpassed by superior Allied aircraft.
