The Messerschmitt Me 262 was the world's first operational jet-powered combat aircraft. Although design work began long before the outbreak of World War II, development problems—from the engines to interference from the highest levels of command—meant the aircraft was not ready for service until mid-1944, too late to achieve the desired impact. The Me 262 was more heavily armed than any Allied aircraft and surpassed all Allied aircraft in speed. It served in a variety of roles, including light bomber, reconnaissance aircraft, and experimental night fighter. Depending on its role, it was given nicknames such as Swallow (Schwalbe) in its fighter versions and Stormbird (Sturmvogel) in its fighter-bomber versions.
