Merchant Convoy

Preventing attacks on unarmed merchant ships is the other main task of the navy, and it was the navy that waged the war day after day with a modest escort of corvettes, frigates, and destroyers, and later with escort carriers. Merchant raids formed a crucial part of strategy for several nations—Germany's Kriegsmarine nearly brought Great Britain to its knees, while the US Navy similarly stifled Japan's movement of industrial goods, materiel, troops, and supplies.

Grouping ships into convoys meant there were more empty oceans out there—hopefully, the raiders wouldn't even find the convoy. This also made escorts more effective, but if a convoy were hit by a surface hunter, such as a heavy cruiser or battlecruiser, the target would be devastated in short order. Nevertheless, the convoy system was a great help. It would be the escorting ships' responsibility to defend them until either a heavy protection force arrived to provide support or the merchants were able to escape. Some of the most heroic and utterly inappropriate actions of the war were carried out in defense of merchant convoys or troop transports.
