Bolt Action: Marder III Ausf. M tank destroyer

*For the final production series, the chassis of the Panzer 38(t) Ausf. M, specially modified for self-propelled guns, was used. The engine was moved to the center, and the fighting compartment was relocated to the floor in the rear of the hull. This also improved splinter protection for the crew, as the fighting compartment was now enclosed at the rear, although it remained open at the top. The redesigned driver's front also offered better protection against gunfire. It carried 27 rounds of ammunition.*

With 942 units produced, the vehicle, now designated Marder III Ausf. M, was the most numerous version of the Marder series and proved to be an effective, albeit vulnerable, tank destroyer in action on all fronts. Production of the Ausf. M ran from May 1943 to May 1944, after which production switched to the more effective and better-armored Jagdpanzer 38(t), which was also based on the Panzer 38(t) chassis.
