Bolt Action: M8 Scott HMC

The M8 75mm Howitzer Motor Carriage (HMC) was based on the ubiquitous M5 Stuart light tank chassis and provided much-needed mobile artillery support to US assault forces. It replaced the M5 Stuart's turret with a more spacious, open-topped turret that could accommodate a short-barreled 75mm M2 (and later M3) howitzer, as well as a mix of smoke and high-explosive ammunition. A .50 caliber heavy machine gun provided additional defensive firepower.

Named after the American Civil War general Winfield Scott, the M8 saw service in North Africa, Tunisia, Northwest Europe, Italy, and the Pacific during World War II, as well as in the Indochina and Vietnam Wars. Used almost exclusively by the US Army or the USMC, a total of 1,778 M8 Scott HMCs were produced. The M8 was increasingly replaced in the self-propelled artillery role by the M7 Priest and the M4 Sherman with a 105 mm howitzer. The open turret of the M8 continued to be used in the support version of the LVT(A)-4 amphibious vehicle.
