As the war continued, more and more Luftwaffe members were called up to form the Luftwaffe field divisions. Twenty-one divisions were established, each with a nominal strength of 12,500 men. They wore the unmistakable blue-grey uniforms of the Luftwaffe, and some even donned the M1942 camouflage jacket.

The average age of soldiers in these units was 30—much older than other front-line troops. These circumstances sometimes led to higher losses than in regular "field units." Nevertheless, the Luftwaffe Field Division units received a total of 18 of the coveted Knight's Crosses during their entire service.
