Louis de Bourbon from Warlord Games

Born into one of France's most distinguished noble families, the young Louis was a well-educated and natural leader, as evidenced by his brief tenure as governor of Burgundy as a teenager and his eventual appointment in 1643 as commander of the French troops against the Spanish. Despite his youth, Louis confronted the veteran Spanish generals at Rocroi, decisively defeating them and thus ending the rule of the Spanish Tercio. The following year, Louis marched into Germany to support the Vicomte de Turenne. The two fought inconclusively against the imperial troops at the Battle of Freiburg. The two French commanders again clashed with the imperial army at Nördlingen in 1645, but this battle also ended in a draw, although it achieved the French strategic goal of relieving Bavaria of imperial troops, at least for a time. In 1646, Louis fought in Flanders alongside the Duke of Orléans.

For the next two years, Louis XIV had to defend his reputation due to political power struggles. However, when much of France rebelled in 1648 and Spain attempted to intervene, the French crown turned to Louis. He met the Spanish at Lens and defeated them in the last major battle of the Thirty Years' War. From 1650 to 1653, he allied himself with the Spanish and fought against Turenne at the Battle of the Faubourg Saint-Antoine. Louis and Turenne clashed again at the Battle of the Dunes in 1658, with Turenne winning a decisive victory that led to the Treaty of the Pyrenees between Spain and France. After his reconciliation with the French crown, Louis fought alongside Turenne against the Dutch in 1672 before personally confronting the Prince of Orange at the bloody Battle of Seneffe in 1674. Following a few more campaigns, Louis retired from military service in 1675 and died eleven years later a national hero.
