Submarines: The Type IX submarine was the most successful submarine of the war, averaging over 100,000 tons sunk per vessel. A Type IX submarine, U-107, was the most successful convoy raiding vessel of the war, sinking nearly 100,000 tons of cargo off Freetown in Africa. The latest variants of this design were capable of ranges exceeding 23,000 miles, allowing them to roam widely in search of convoys, while their heavy torpedo load enabled them to keep pace with a convoy and attack night after night.

MTBs: The R1-class R-boats (from the German Räumboot, meaning minesweeper) were intended to be used as shallow-water minesweepers, but as the war progressed, they became multi-purpose vessels. Their duties expanded to include patrol, anti-submarine and convoy escort, minesweeping, and rescue operations. Some R-boat classes, such as the R310, were equipped with torpedo tubes, although their performance was very modest compared to boats specifically designed for this task.

The ultimate S-boat, which was operational in considerable numbers, was the S-100 class, produced from 1943 onwards and considered the best fast attack craft of its time. The S-100 class was nicknamed "Calotte" due to its rounded armored bridge. It was powered by three Daimler-Benz engines, giving it a total output of around 7,500 hp and enabling it to achieve an excellent top speed of 48 knots.
