The men of the Kriegsmarine were often ordered to perform more duties than just at sea. Ship and submarine crews were frequently deployed on land in coastal areas, easily recognizable by their sailor or grey-blue submarine uniforms.

They formed at least three divisions of their own. Besides officers from the Wehrmacht, they were often also led on land by their own commanders, such as corvette captains or submarine commanders.
