The Korean People's Army (KPA) was a formidable military force during the turbulent Korean War. It comprised an impressive 150,000 to 200,000 men and was organized into 10 infantry divisions, 1 armored division, and 1 air force division. Even before the outbreak of the war, conscription had been introduced in North Korea, and many young men were either encouraged or coerced into service by their own families, who promised them financial rewards.

When the Korean War broke out in 1950, the Korean People's Army (KPA) was ready and well-prepared for the impending conflict. It possessed the advantage of superior training and more affordable equipment, which set it apart from its opponents. Furthermore, previous experiences in guerrilla warfare in South Korea had left the Republic of Korea Army (ROKA) little time to rebuild a solid military presence. Consequently, the KPA's initial attacks on June 25, 1950, proved highly effective.

The KPA foot soldier was known for his resilience, able to withstand not only the challenges of the enemy but also the harsh Korean climate and the demands of his own superiors. Modeled on the Soviet mechanized army, armed with weapons supplied by Stalin and reinforced by experienced veterans discharged from China, the KPA troops were a force to be reckoned with. They were larger and more impressive than the United Nations had initially anticipated and paved the way for a protracted and difficult conflict.
