Shocked by their first encounters with the Allied Matilda, Lee and Sherman tanks, the Chi-Nu medium tank represented Japan's attempt to modernize its armored forces during a time of intense conflict and rapid technological advances.

It was equipped with a 75 mm Type 3 tank gun, which allowed it to engage Allied tanks more effectively. Furthermore, the Chi-Nu featured improved armor compared to its predecessors, with frontal armor up to 50 mm thick. Its engine proved powerful enough to give the Chi-Nu good mobility. Based on experience with equipping the Chi-Ha with Rift weapons, a variant of the Chi-Nu was also equipped with the Type 99 Shiboru gun.
