Bolt Action: Jagdtiger

The Tiger Ausf. B tank destroyer, known as the Jagdtiger, was the heaviest tank used in World War II. It was developed late in the conflict and only about 80 were actually deployed, the first in September 1944.

Like many other nations, Germany utilized existing tank designs to produce self-propelled guns and tank destroyers. The Jagdtiger was a colossal example of this practice—the Germans aimed to upgrade the fearsome Tiger II by mounting the 128 mm Pak 44 gun in a specially designed hull on the extended King Tiger chassis. 150 units were ordered to combat the increasingly heavy Soviet armor—the Pak was more than capable of penetrating Allied armor.

Weighing in at 71 tons, the behemoth boasted nearly 10 inches of armor on the front of its hull, making it one of the best-protected tanks of the war. However, all this weight and protection came at the cost of reliability. Many roads and bridges simply couldn't support its weight. This, coupled with increasing shortages of spare parts and fuel, prevented the Jagdtiger from reaching its full potential.

The centerpiece of the Jagdtiger was the 128 mm PaK 44 anti-tank gun. The Jagdtiger was renowned for its long-range capabilities and was rightly feared. However, the gun's limited range meant the tank had to turn on the spot to acquire an enemy target, and the two-part ammunition required an additional crew member for loading. To reflect this in Bolt Action, the 128 mm PaK 44 does not suffer a -1 penetration penalty when firing at targets at more than half its range.

Only two German heavy tank destroyer battalions contained Jagdtigers: the 512th Heavy Panzerjäger Battalion and the 653rd Heavy Panzerjäger Battalion. A company of the 512th Battalion was commanded by the famous tank destroyer Otto Carius, who is credited with destroying more than 150 tanks and a similar number of anti-tank guns—he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves. The box contains a plastic tank, a unit card, damage markers for the vehicle, and a decal sheet.

The model is delivered unassembled and unpainted.
