The Italian paratroopers were led by tough, experienced officers and were a formidable opponent. During the Battle of El Alamein, the troops of the Folgore Division (Lightning Division) repelled British attacks for weeks. The Folgore fought until their last ammunition was exhausted, disabling British tanks with almost suicidal close-quarters combat and preferring bayonet charges to raising a white flag—such was their zeal.

Like their counterparts in the Regio Esercito (Royal Italian Army), the airborne divisions relied heavily on the Breda 37 medium machine gun and the Mortaio da 81/14 Modello 35 81mm mortar for close-range fire support.
