Whether it’s an artillery battery miles from the battlefield, a naval gun out at sea or a ground-attack aircraft high above the fray – such weapons systems would be far less effective without the services of well-trained observers. Each infantry division was assigned its own artillery support units in the Regio Esercito and whilst many of the artillery pieces and aircraft were obsolete, they were still quite deadly in the right circumstances. Given the firepower these forward observers could bring to bear on their targets, neutralising them was a top priority for opposing commanders.
